A King Like No Other

Jesus is still on His throne. Jesus still hears the earnest prayers of His church. Whether in death or deliverance, Jesus will be glorified as sovereign King of a people who gladly put His worth on display through suffering for the sake of His name. Indeed, we have a King like no other!

Jesus Christ came to Earth to inaugurate His Kingdom. But the Kingdom of Christ would not look like any other kingdom of this world. It would be a kingdom without borders, a kingdom without end, and a kingdom without rivals.

Toxic!

Trying to mortify the spin on a prevalent buzz-word.

Evangelicals have taken note that our culture has systematically wiped out the word “evil” from our vocabulary. But don’t be mistaken, Christians and non-Christians alike are still very much aware of malevolence. But instead of recognizing the evil one, the evil of sin, and the evil in our own thoughts and actions when they are opposed to God, we have taken the personality out of evil.

The Demythologizing of Sex

Here's something that I would like to read more about.

Kevin DeYoung points something out in his latest book that I would love to read more about.

A Very Useful Post on Jesus and Homosexuality

Scot McKnight has written a concise and clear post, arguing against the common claim that Jesus did not speak about the issue of homosexuality.  One for pastors (and indeed everyone) to keep on file as this is a point we will have to face again and again in the coming days.

Covering our Darkness

The darkness that covered the land when the poor Lamb of God was brutalized and stripped on that cross, all that we might be covered.  And, we are covered, we who trust in this Lamb.  As Sinclair Ferguson once said, “The last thing Jesus wore before his crucifixion was a seamless garment.  Where is it now?  Spiritually, it is on every believer.”

Tonight, my church will hold a Good Friday service of hymns and Scripture readings.  Here, is the way I will frame the hearts of our flock to contemplate the horrific reality of the death of the Son of God:

"Why do we come here tonight?

Because, he came.

The Hardest Week

At the end of an unusually exhausting or challenging week I sometimes find myself saying, "This has been the hardest week of my life." This is often simply a sophisticated way of complaining. We want others to know how hard we have worked or want them to feel sorry for how much we have been through. In reality, there was only one person who could truly say, "This was the hardest week of my life" without it involving any sinful self-pity--and, He said it in a multiplicity of ways as He pressed through it for our redemption.

The Second Commandment, Westminster and Images of Jesus

God has already given us one visual means by which we both remember and participate in the body and blood of our Lord Jesus. Scripture calls this the “Lord’s Supper” (1 Cor. 11:20). We are left to ask ourselves the question, "Do I believe that God’s Word and sacraments are sufficient means of salvation and sanctification for His elect?" The answer we give to this question will reveal how we approach the issue of images of Jesus.

No, the Westminster divines weren’t intentionally attacking The Jesus Storybook Bible; but they probably would have taken issue with the pictures of Jesus.

On Muffin Tops, Billboards, and Beauty

Some billboards make me want to dress like a ninja and commit some vandalism...but I'm a Christian and all, so I wrote an article instead.

This is a billboard advertisement just minutes away from my house. I have to drive by it on many occasions. It’s no wonder why so many women, from tweens to moms, have such body-image issues. A plastic surgeon, who is ostensibly all about helping people feel better about their bodies, is just showing his hand.

Women, they want you to feel horrible about yourself.
