Rahab Contra Mundum - Part One

Theme: Rahab’s Story and Our Own
This week’s lessons describe how by faith Rahab became an unexpected recipient of the grace of God.

SCRIPTURE
Joshua 2:1-24

And Joshua the son of Nun sent two men secretly from Shittim as spies, saying, “Go, view the land, especially Jericho.” And they went and came into the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab and lodged there.
It would be a miracle greater than the Jewish crossing of the Jordan or the falling down of the walls of Jericho if Rahab, the Amorite prostitute, knew Latin. This was because Latin didn't come to Palestine until the Roman conquest, which was about 1000 years after the days in which she lived. But if Rahab had known Latin, Rahab might well have described her situation in Jericho as “Rahab contra mundum,” which means "Rahab against the world."

What is Discipleship? In addressing the subject, Jonathan Edwards once wrote:

What is Discipleship? In addressing the subject, Jonathan Edwards once wrote:

I claim no right to myself—no right to this understanding, this will, these affections that are in me; neither do I have any right to this body or its members—no right to this tongue, to these hands, feet, ears, or eyes.

Set toward the Cross

Now from the little town of Ephraim, about twelve miles north of Jerusalem, Jesus left the crowds and started toward Jerusalem. As He marched ahead of them, the disciples no doubt were thinking in their hearts, “Not that road, Lord! That road leads to Jerusalem and death!” But His stride becomes longer and more rapid. There is tremendous purpose in His step; there is urgency and haste. In this moment, I think, Jesus fulfilled the prophecy made in Isaiah 50:7: “For the Lord God helps me; therefore I have not been confounded; therefore I have set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame.” Jesus has become the inflexible Christ. At least four times in the gospels He had said, “My hour has not yet come.” But now His hour has come, and as Luke 9:51 says, “When the days drew near for Him to be received up, He set His face to go to Jerusalem.”

Titled, Not Entitled

Everyone is gifted in one way or another. Whether we are called to serve on the mission field, in the ministry, in the workplace or in the home, God has individually gifted us with the skills and knowledge needed to do His work. When we use our gifts wherever He places us, we glorify His name and reflect His character.

However, we all have a sinful tendency to pride ourselves in our title, position and abilities. For those of us who have earned a title by a diligent use of our gifts, this can be an especially difficult spiritual battle. Here are 7 humbling truths that we would do well to remember as we seek to combat pride and continue to honor the Lord with our gifts

In Command - Part Five

Theme: Genuine Faith in God
This week’s lessons describe how Joshua got to be the faithful and courageous leader for God that he was.
The final thing I want to say is that Christian leaders must also demonstrate genuine faith in God. Joshua was preeminently a man of faith. God told Joshua, “This is the land and I’m going to give it to you." Joshua believed God, so when he went into the land with the other spies and searched it out, he didn't care if there were giants. It didn't bother him that there were walled cities. Oh, certainly it was an obstacle; they had to be dealt with somehow. And later he was the commander who along with Israel’s tribes had to personally deal with them. But those things didn't weigh heavily with him because Joshua believed God. And if God said He was going to give them the land, well, He was going to give them the land. Joshua would simply operate on that premise.

A Completely Different Picture of Our Lord

During Jesus’ ministry as we have seen it thus far in Mark’s Gospel, whenever Jesus appeared in public, there was always a tremendous crowd around Him. Mark 7:24 says that Jesus “could not be hid.” Once, when He went into a home for an hour’s rest from the noonday heat, a Syrophoenician woman came and begged Him to heal her daughter. On another occasion, the crowd was so great that a woman could get near enough only to touch the hem of His garment. In Jericho, little Zaccheus had to climb a tree in order to see the Lord Jesus. Once, on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, the crowds were so great that He got into a boat and pushed out from shore to create a moat between Him and the multitude. Many times Jesus could not even enter a town, but had to stay out in the desert places because of the crowds.

Simonetta Carr's latest biography.

I love reading Simonetta Carr’s Christian Biographies for Young Readers. The books in this series highlight those who have persevered in the faith. Some are familiar names, like all the “Johns:” John Calvin, John Owen, John Knox, and Jonathan Edwards. But Carr has also written on some lesser known saints such as Lady Jane Grey.
